One of my focuses for this year has been to look after my health and wellbeing. Since moving out and finding work which had allowed me a more stable home time, I have been able to go to the gym on a more regular basis (generally 3 times a week). When I first started I did whatever weights the boys did: bench presses, squats, deadlifts, bicep curls etc. This year, I changed my fitness regime to be less about weights and how much I could lift, but more functional strength, movement, balance and flexibility. I found I prefer more floor workouts and callisthenics, with the odd sporting activity for agility and endurance - this year it was lunchtime work soccer. Yoga especially has been a big part of my fitness routine this year.
A lot of my inspiration is drawn from lifestyle content creators found on YouTube. Here are my go to channels to follow along for free fitness workouts.
Blogilates
This was the OG of YouTube fitness channels for me. I may have initially found her from various YouTube collaborations, but she is one I always fall back to for fitness inspiration. Cassie of Blogilates, is uber charismatic and full of energy, motivation and positivity. Her focus is Pop Pilates and HIIT workouts that are sure to make you sweat and muscles tremble, all delivered with a smile and the latest pop tunes. Seriously Cassie, how can you still be so cheery and make us want to die all at the same time?
Boho Beautiful
My current favourite fitness channel, I go to Boho Beautiful for slightly more intermediate to advanced yoga positions. Shot against beautiful locations across the world, Boho Beautiful videos are a mix of yoga and pilates and embodies the wandering free spirit yogi. That’s the dream: to travel the world to exotic locations and get by via doing yoga videos.
Yoga with Adriene
I’ve been doing this workout nearly every weekday morning before I head to work for the past year. It’s a quick and easy routine and a great way to wake up the body after a night's sleep. Adriene has a very calm and soothing voice who’s videos are good for people of all levels. Adriene has a great ‘Yoga for’ series with different yoga practices curated for various concerns.
The Fitness Marshall
I came across the Fitness Marshall from a collab with Blogilates. If you want a dance cardio workout that does not feel like exercise Fitness Marshall is worth checking out. Caleb’s dance workouts are fun with moves that are sexy and full of swag. Do a few of these and you will get your heart pumping in no time.
